Herman Zaage

Herman Zaage

Artist, printmaker and teacher Herman Zaage died quite suddenly this spring. His death has left a gaping hole in the Staten Island art community. Herman was renowned for his accomplishments in mezzotint, a complicated etching process and was a master of all other forms of printmaking.

Herman was a leader. He was one of the original founders of The Art Lab. His printmaking workshops supported many talented artists. He was a staunch defender of the environment and led hikes through Staten Island's Greenbelt.

Most of all Herman was a humanist. Few people I have known have had such moral authority. We all miss him greatly.
